ANBSP CONCUSSION INFORMATION

Zackery Lystedt Law

In 2009 the Washington State Legislature passed the Zackery Lystedt Law, which requires policies for the management of concussion and head injury in youth sports.

​

Naturopathic Physicians earn concussion training in naturopathic medical school. Diplomate of American Naturopathic Board of Sports Physicians (ANBSP) are further educated with concussion guidelines and return to play. Both ANBSP diplomate and professional members are required to complete Heads Up Concussion training.

ANBSP plans to work with certain organizations to allow our members and diplomate to obtain further training in concussion management.

​

I n Washington state, currently naturopathic physician is not listed as licensed health care providers that are trained in evaluating and and treatment of concussion/ brain injuries and authorized to allow the athlete to return to play.  If your athletes require official return to play, please seek for the following licensed health care providers.

  • What licensed health care providers are trained in the evaluation and treatment of concussions/brain injuries and authorized to allow the athlete to return to play?

      • Medical Doctors (MD)   

      • Doctor of Osteopathy (DO)

      • Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP)

      • Physicians Assistant (PA)

      • Licensed Certified Athletic Trainers (AT/L)

  • Research is currently being done to determine which other licensed health care providers may have sufficient training to qualify to authorize return to play.  The WIAA will update schools and this website as this information becomes available.
